The Story of Lanta Orchid Nursery
|
| |
"First
I wanted to open a flower shop
on Phuket, where I lived before.
But when I found out that there
are quite a lot of flower shops
already, I got the idea to do something
with the many orchids, that I had
collected over the years, because
of their beautiful flowers. So the
idea was born to show them to people,
that are interested to know more
of these tropical plants.
To
rent or buy a piece of land
on Phuket was too expensive and
there is a big orchid farm already,
so I decided to have a look to the
emerging destination of Krabi and
decided for Lanta Island as the
more beautiful and natural place.
My orchid nursery was opened in
November 1999, but the construction
took place already in July 1999.
After
this, I moved all the orchids,
that I stored in the garden of a
friend of mine in Phuket and most
of the orchids stored in the garden
of my parents upcountry to Lanta
Island, so that they had time to
adopt to the new climate. Some did
this very well, some had problems
to get new leaves, but recovered
during the next season.
I
took interesting parts
about orchids out of books and asked
somebody, to type it into the computer
and added the pictures I made over
the years. So this is the small
exhibition, I have now. I later
added the many colourful hybrids,
so that there are some flowers year-round
and many hotels ask me today to
provide them with the beautiful
flowers on special occasions.
In
2001, when the district Lanta Island
celebrated its 100. anniversary,
I was asked to arrange the flower
decorations on the stage and on
the buffet tables in the old town
of Si Raya."
Since
then, I had to move my
orchid nursery 2 times, because
of land disputes with the owners
and I am now located in the mountains
above Lanta Long Beach opposite
the Elephant Trekking. Since 2007,
I have added a butterfly farm in
the back of my orchid garden.
